Switching ISPs

Gnurple Services is moving from Magma to Teksavvy.  The switch-over date is *supposed* to be April 30th, which in reality means service will probably stop sometime in the 5th week of April and resume after no less than two handfuls of hair are expended in extreme agony.

On the plus side, this will lower monthly operating costs by about $20 and should increase throughput and maximum data limits.  Rah.

The thing about ideas, though, is that they lead to more ideas. Have you ever noticed that when you sit down to write something, half the ideas that end up in it are ones you thought of while writing?

Coolness.  I've heard lots of good things about Teksavvy.

Any tips when shopping for this sort of stuff?

I've agreed to help a friend start a website for her jewelry business.  I'd be looking for a hosting service (which I think is different than what you look for).  I'll probably want PHP and MySQL support (which I'm comfortable with).  She wants to be able to post things herself, but not going as far as having an actual e-shopping.  It's a hobby business for her so she doesn't want to go whole hog.

Here's a forum where you might be able to find useful information about the company you're considering:
http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all

Otherwise, all I can think of is the usual stuff: ask friends, etc. for recommendations; get a list of providers; browse their sites for pricing and options; compare them to get some idea of who offers what you want for the best price; check out forums and use your online search fu to check out their reputations.

I can't really make any recommendations for hosting as I do all my stuff myself, from my basement.  Some of the guys around here at the office do co-located servers, but they all manage their servers, too (the colo guys handle hardware issues).

If you're looking for help setting up stuff like Gallery or other LAMP services, I can offer advice and assistance with that sort of thing.

If she wants to do her own photography (jewelry photography is a serious challenge) I can offer some advice on studio setup and light management.

There are open-source e-Commerce software (LAMP-type stuff), if she ever does want to go that route without digging into the ol' pocketbook.

As far as gaining visibility, there's probably loads of stuff out there on the internet about Search Engine Optimization (I'm not familiar with any of this stuff, sorry ... the only thing I know is that having a blog/news section that's updated often, and frequently posting new content in general, is a good thing for both SEO and fans)

There are sites like deviantart.com that are good places to show your stuff off.  That site is more about showing your work than about generating commerce, but it might bring in a little, and might help gain reputation points too.

I can't think of anything else right now.  Cheers!

REMINDER: The ISP switchover is today, so anything gnurple.net will be spotty for awhile.

All should be back up and running now, the root servers are aware of my new IP address.

Doesn't help that my secondary NS wasn't answering... dSad

I now have a more reliable secondary NS.

Yeah, it seems to be working OK.  Glad you were able to get the bugs worked out!  Smiley

I'm tempted to say that it seems faster, but I don't know if that's reality or just my desire to see an improvement.  embarrassed
